You just have to figure out whether it is rock climbing in general you truly enjoy, or just bouldering. No reason convincing yourself that you should be clippig bolts simply because the bouldering conditions aren't good.

Perfect example: I know for a fact that a good friend of mine would always choose an intense gym pulling session over a a day of mild bolt-clipping. The dude likes to pull hard, always. He is a boulderer for the most part, and this is the satisfaction he gets out of the activity.

For me this is unthinkable. I would rather be climbing 5.3 slabs all day outside than pulling plastic indoors. As a matter of fact, I'd rather be outside just looking at a rock than indoors pulling plastic.

This is a leisure activity; the only measure of worthiness should be your degree of enjoyment.

I'm vaguely disturbed that you know I have a blog....

I'm vaguely disturbed that you know I have a blog. But t...

ahhhh, if I had the answer to everything....
But then again, I do have these:

Yes, when you're tied in, holds are less sharp, unless you're projecting some heinous 13+ stuff. Rumney for example: not hard to find mid-12s with mostly big holds and big moves between them. Big holds I mean by bouldering standards.

Yes, I actually do believe there are less bugs around crags than there are around boulders. Unless the crag overlooks a swamp. But bugs are hell for everyone. It's illegal in Canad-eh, but I know you guys can buy some flesh-melting 90 proof deet stuff.

And sweating in a harness sucks for sure, but it's either that or staying home fixing shit around the house and sweating just the same.

The bigger issue, though, is how one approaches the whole climbing gig. See, I don't mind climbing fun 10s all day if it's too hot and sweaty to try more committing stuff. But bouldering V0s all day would probably bore me. And I'm not a project driven climber. I have a ticklist, but I'm in no rush to tick anything.

Oh man, now this comment is going on a tangent from tissue's post, and I just realized I could've summarized the whole thing in one sentence: climbing outside when it's hot and sweaty beats not climbing, climbing in a gym, and climbing in a garage.

very scientific.

very scientific.

Thanks Rocky Bal-bro-a. Next time I drive down to Rumney you are most definitely dropping by as well.
I mean look: my finger gets stuck in the biner at every single hard clip, no joke. I cannot for the life of me find good rests on a route, unless it's a ledge I can lay down on. And I can't do hard moves period, regardless of where I am in relation with the last bolt.
It's a match made in heaven: we'll go climb, leave bail-biners on long 11s, and work that awesome three bolt 12a proj and spray about it at baker river campground in the evening.
I don't know how it is with bouldering, but sucking at climbing takes almost none of the fun away from sport climbing.

Now I have to go write a post about how I was a poseur back when I was a skater as well.

@tommy: Interesting ideas.
